Welcome to installment 2 of the great Electro Saga. In this episode, tight-assed white people coerce bleats and brrapps from their computers in hope of inciting the palsied shaking that passes for dancing in small underground nightclubs from Sheffield to Dortmund.

I can’t think of any single thing that binds these songs together except that they all feel like one moment in time. This is my soundtrack for the summer. Don’t ask me why, but these songs feel like the summer I want to have.

There is so much to listen to today, so much to choose from… There was an age when musicians wrote music not for the airwaves but for themselves. Let us indulge ourselves and take the time to listen, experience and trip!

Some of these are urban songs sung with a country twang. Some are in the purest country tradition with a little edgy instrumentation to bring them up-to-date. But they all have an essence that I think of as being undeniably and authentically American Roots. No sane person likes the junk they play on CMT. But If you are someone who says that you don’t like country or folk music at all - give this a listen and tell me what you think.

1983 called and Peter Hook wants his baseline back. And oh, the Gang of Four are pissed. I enjoyed the 80s the first time around - maybe not the oddly buttoned shirts… but pretty much everything else. These bands are mostly too young to remember the 80s as anything but schoolyards and runny noses. But they have chosen to steal from the best. Enjoy the 80s all over again… it’s almost like having been there.

You may be familiar with some of these songs or bands. But one of the key features of Twee, other than a complete lack of testosterone, is its small label, DIY credo. So very few of these bands are household names. There are only two main types of Twee, inexplicably happy and exaggeratedly wistful. Here is a beginners sampler of Twee treats in both flavours.

Pleasing melodies, catchy lyrics and more hooks than a ProBass fishing tournament. Each of these songs is a perfect pop moment, a gem, a piece of rock hard candy to be enjoyed again and again.

These are the bastard children of OMD and Ultravox. But somewhere along the way synthpop seems to have lost its appeal to the mass. This isn’t thumping techno or chill-out room ambient, this is just pretty pop songs set to the sweet, sweet sounds of computer-love.

In the music biz, the deck is already stacked against women. But even more so against women who want to make highly-individual, non-mass market music. We take our hats off to these women for making their own music. Much respect to these extraordinary machines.

Not all progress is good, and so it goes that not all prog rock is good. Of late, the tradition is being refined and redefined. These are some recent* favourites.
*May contain nuts. May have come into contact with 1970s.

We're building something, here. If only we knew what. Some would say, "You're too old." Time's too short and friends are few. Pleasing people is so predictable. Entertaining, on the other hand… Come on mate you deaf or what?
